NEW ORLEANS CHARM - DIMINISHING ELEGANCE

Some of you might know that I traveled to New Orleans recently.

This was not my first time there, however it has been a year since my last visit.

The city looked different to me this time around.

It looked battled, defeated, sad in a way.

The Bourbon Street experiences no changes. It is a world of its own.

Anything goes and there is little that is perceived strange or unacceptable there.

I travel to New Orleans for other things this splendid city has to offer.

I go there for a huge dose of old world charm and uniqueness, the architecture and art, the food and the music.

All the Things "New Orleans" are the reasons for my numerous trips.

I have noticed the changes there before, but not as pronounced.

The French Quarter is changing and it is not a change for the better.

The beautiful shops, boutiques and galleries are being one by one replaced with t-shirt shops and tacky souvenir stores. The things that make it unique and special are devoured by the commercial tourist traps in a bad taste. I saw an art gallery with a sign posted at the entrance " Going out of business everything must go." The Steve Jarrett Gallery is a place that has been a part of the fabric known as The Royal Street for a long time is another in a long line of special places to close down.

I believe that the economy is one thing, but what is happening in The French Quarter might not be economy related. The t-shirt shops are an infestation there. An infestation out of control propagated by people who do not care about the city or about what they are destroying.

Replacing the unique with masses of tacky commercial sameness.

It isn't too late to turn it around.

I wish I could organize a movement to save The Quarter.

The tourists feed this destruction.

Maybe they will wake up before it is too late.

I posted a painting to this blog not long ago titled "Royal Corner"

It is a painting of a corner shop. An elegant and so New Orleans jewelry store.

I loved its look and the nostalgia that it breathed onto the street.

It had the magic of The French Quarter and that is why I painted it.

Today this store is no longer there. I saw the shop being emptied and a week later it was filled with mass produced junk. Sad

I returned from my vacation late, late last night.

Despite the freezing cold, it is good to be home and I can't wait to paint something new.

My studio was the first room I entered even though it was past 2am when we arrived and just standing there for a few seconds made me whole and happy.

I am seriously questioning myself now what kind of school my kid is attending.

I just found out that my son "owes" money to several people.

I asked him if he borrowed any. No - he said.

So how come you owe money? Oh, there are just some people who keep asking me where is there Dollar.

So what do you say? I don't have it he replies. And... They tell me to better bring it tomorrow.

Monday all ham was stolen from the sandwich I gave him for lunch so he was hungry because he decided he can't eat just he bread.

I think my head will explode.

Chauncey H Duker Elementry in McHenry, Il

As some of you know I just moved this year.
We moved from Western Springs, IL to McHenry, IL.
My 10 year old son is now attending Chauncey H Duker Elementry there.
This is only his second school.
He has only attended one school in the past and we see a huge difference between the two already.
My son Tony is my only child and I have no experience here, neither does he for that matter.
He was really looking forward to going to a new school, but it all fell apart very quickly.
We are 3 weeks into the school year and it seems that everyday is more miserable for him than the last.
Starting with some unfriendly remarks and comments, we have now moved on to threats of physical violence.
Yesterday during lunch another boy took his snack, intentionally tossed and spilled it on the lunch table and then ordered my son to clean it freakin' up.
Where is the supervision?
I am going to call the school and see what they are going to tell me.
Maybe some of you with more elementary school experience can tell me if this is normal and I am making a big deal out of nothing.

I think it would be beneficial to me to move every 3 years.
I need a lot of stuff, but I also accumulate needless stuff, or just have stuff that I forgot about and it is all outdated trash. May be treasures to other people though. That's why it is sometimes hard to get rid of it unless of course you have to carry it. I guess this is the deciding moment for me. Do I really want it enough to carry it?

Today I had another fedex issue. What is up with fedex these days?
They must have retrained their people to cheat every possible customer any chance they get.
The box in question: 41"x 40"x 4". These are my exact measurements. Cost $58.00
The fedex version : 42" x 42" x 5" - cost $110.00.
I made the mistake of not taking with me a printed rate estimate.
"So you are not going to ship it?" No, I'll re-pack it. Thank you. "Are you sure?"

PLAYING DOMINOES

I have been under the influence.
Not substance.
Inspirational, eye opening truth.
Even though I've known the truth for a while, I chose to kind of put it on the back burner, dismiss it temporarily, lay it down to sleep or just pretend it is not there.
About a month ago I heard the words of truth coming to me through the radio.
It was a moment of awaking.
The words came so loud and clear and I heard the voice asking me "are you getting this? ARE YOU????"
Yes. I am getting it.

For days I was searching and analyzing.
I came to the conclusion that a change has to be made.
I talked with my husband, we both agreed and the only thing lacking was the action.
There I was, I had the agreement and the willingness, but there was no action.
Days turned into weeks and the whole idea just kept on slipping away from my view.

Late at night nine days ago I replayed the voice.
Yes, I am getting it and yet I am still waiting.
Last weekend I finally took my first step.
A big change is scary and I am scared. A LOT.
I have to leave behind so much. Will it be woth it?
Will I regret it? I can just leave things unchanged familiar and comfy and forget the whole thing.
The voice won't leave me alone.
Time is of the essence.

The dominoes are falling.
I pushed the first one last Sunday.
Today I pushed another one.
I'm setting it all in motion.
Keep your fingers crossed for me.
I'm beginning a journey.

PRICE OF SILVER - PLEASE READ
As the prices of Silver go up so very fast these days, I will have to raise the prices on all jewelry once the spot price goes over 35.00 per ounce.

I've been trying to keep the prices steady, but now since the replacement cost of my Silver stock has gone up about 30 percent, the price of jewelry will unfortunately be affected.

TODAY the price of Silver went over 35.00 per ounce.
If there is no change in the spot price I will have to raise prices in my store on Monday 03-07-2011.

They will go up on average about 10 percent.

I am listening to the morning news. New Orleans is 72 today. March 2nd and my feet are freezing cold.

I live in one of the most expensive States which just became more expensive by some 70 percent.

My house dropped about 35 percent in value since we bought it and is now deep, deep under water.

For months now I've been walking around with dozens of ideas for bracelets in head.

They all required a tool I didn't have. Every time I placed an order with "Rio" I place the mandrel in my basket only to end up removing it before payment because the total of my order just grew way out of line. Last week I finally decided to just order the mandrel and nothing else and so I did.

Putting ideas into tangible objects does not always go so smoothly.

Nonetheless, here is my first bangle and and it turned out exactly as I wanted.

Today is just another miserable wintry day.

I am trying really hard to remember why I live here.

I think long and hard and can't find a reason except for just one thing.

The truth is that all this sacrifice is for my son.

We live in an area with a killer school district and that is why I suffer through this weather year after year.

I get up way earlier than I would ever allow myself to get out of bed.

I make breakfast and pack a lunch.

I go outside and brush the snow off my car then drive across train tracks every day.

It is supposed to be the worst in the last 50 years. They are saying that the lake will stand 25 feet tall spilling onto the streets. It is indeed getting worse. The snow is coming down faster and faster.

There is more snow on the street right now as the traffic keeps growing. I haven't seen one salt truck yet.

"Contagion" in Western Springs is making it impossible to get out of my driveway

Yesterday I noticed some signs posted on my Wolf Rd. announcing temporary street closures. I though that some kind road construction project was going up. Little strange though - December?
Today in the morning, I was pleasantly surprised to see no traffic in front of my house making it easy to get out of my driveway and take Tony to school. As soon as I was on the road though I saw a police car
blocking the road 1/4 block from my house at the most. Oh, the construction, I thought.
I took the side road and was stopped by a river of traffic and people on foot. All this commotion, hmmmmm. I passed the post office and at the stop sign right by the train station I see a snow making huge, blue truck. Ok, there is snow everywhere, but they need more of it downtown Western Springs?
They were snowing up the sidewalk and windows of the Village Hardware store. More police, more snow, more street closings, agrrr.

That was the morning. Not too bad. Fast forward to 3:30 pm. I need to go and get my kid from school. It is starting to snow, no not the snow maker, the real thing.
I grab my boxes I packed today to take them to the post office on the way, but Wolf Rd. is a parking lot.
My driveway - blocked. I back up all the way to the street, cars after cars and more cars. They have to stop at the red light on the 47th, but of course it costs every one of these drivers way to much to let me out. They just pull up one after the other and as they get to my driveway and see me waiting there ready to pull out does anyone feel gentlemanly to let me go, on no, that would be way to much to ask. They just block me in over and over. A street full of jerks.

This is actually not all that unusual, except that the traffic today is probably 5 folds of normal.
I go to the post office to drop off my boxes and hear a comment here and there.

Contagion with Matt Damon is what is causing the traffic to go out of control in front of my house.
It is nice to see that most people here don't go crazy and hysterical running to see this. You could see a few onlookers here and there but nothing major. They are crushing a car into a store by the train station and Mr. Damon is supposedly here.
I thought I might go there and take some pictures for you. I'm afraid this idea came a little late to me though, sorry. It is getting dark and it is way to cold to stand there and wait for a glimpse.
I was never impressed much by celebrity, weird but true. I also tend to think sometimes that they are not real, sort of like a conspiracy theory. Hollywood trying to trick us into believing that these are real people while in fact.... oh, I better not go there.
Now, I start to sound looney. I think I'll stop here.
Time for homework.

I am still packing and shipping your orders. I don't know why this activity is so time consuming for me.
Perhaps because I am one of those people who have to check and double check and triple and quadriple check every single package before I finally drop it off at the post office. Even there I have this urge to open the boxes and check again, but I am thankfully able to resist it. I know this is some type of a disorder, but I don't think of it that way. I'm sure this is only one of several in my case. So, yes I am getting it all out and very soon they will all be where they now belong.

This is just a quick update. I haven't had much computer time lately. The Black Friday is fast approaching and I am trying to get as much done as possible before then. I do have new pieces on etsy though.

This was a lot of work.

I fused and painted 73 new cabs.

Some are pairs for earrings, most are just focal pieces.

All are one of a kind and this time around there was not a single cab that needed to be reworked or otherwise no good.

This piece ended up with a ton of paint on the surface making it pretty expensive to paint so the intro on this painting is only valid for one day.It is pretty impressive with all the texture and its size. Hope you like.

Today I drove to Blick's to replenish my stack of art supplies.
On the way back we passed a man perhaps in the mid 50's who was standing in the middle of a busy intersection.
He was holding up a sign:

HOMELESS
HUNGRY
NEEDS WORK

The sign did not say needs money, or help or a handout.
Simply, needs work.
It broke my heart.

I think it is clear that we don't need any more handouts.
Only jobs.
I hope the people who see this man today realize that we are all connected and traveling in the very same direction.

I listed a new piece. I was going to use a different chain and the design was quite a bit different initially.
I wore this piece yesterday on this chain and for now this is how I listed it. When time allows I am going to change it though and complete it the way I planned.
The pendant will not change, the chain will.

I planned out so many things to do today, so the less time I spend on the computer, the more I'll accomplish today.
You'll see all of it, I promise.

BUSY BEA

I can see that my work is progressing in leaps and bounds.
Consistency has always been a problem for me.
This past week has been very, very productive.
Not only have I been able to complete a lot of work, but a lot of time consuming work.
It feels good.
Today I scraped my table off old paint, or no, I scraped old paint off my table.
I say table because I use a whole table for my palette. The traditional artist's palette is too miniature for me and so I use a table with a glass top. Love it.
I scraped it clean and laid out fresh paint.
I have a venti Toffee Mocha right next to it and I am ready to go.

STERLING SILVER FILIGREE

I took a filigree workshop a little bit over a month ago.
I knew this ancient art form was a thing of the past in this country.
With the exception of a few dedicated jewelers, filigree is made mostly in places like Thailand and India these day.
This is why I am so excited to have learned some basics of making filigree and you will see more lacy pieces from me. I tried etching lace designs in the past and some of them turned out quite nicely, however I wanted more texture that I am able to now get with this technique.
It is enormously time consuming, minute, tedious work of fine detail created piece by piece.
I start out with a plain Sterling Silver wire and twist two or more strands tightly together. Once annealed it is ready to go and be cut and shaped into scrolls and circles, you name it. I have a basic idea of what I am going to do with it before I cut the wire, but the arranging of the tiny pieces on my table is really where the final idea develops and often it is different from the original concept I had in mind.
I started out small at first, but I see my designs develop into pretty elaborate pieces. I have to figure out how to keep the scale down because they are growing pretty large on me.
The next process to learn is granulation. Once I tackle this tiny detail mastery you will see even more detail in my metal lace work.

Anyway, just wanted to post some filigree info here.
It appears that some people get it seriously confused with mass produced metal filigree stampings which technically are not filigree at all.
So, just for the record:
Real filigree design, made entirely by hand from scratch and the reason why I go into all this trouble making it the old fashioned way is to stand out not to follow.

I am in a very happy place right now and especially so with this new technique I've learned which gives me a very satisfying sense of accomplishment even though I spend hours on each piece twisting and curling the wire. Once it is completed I know that I made something special that isn't being made anymore, so no toxic unfounded comments please.

I have a few more pieces in the works. There are two new necklaces. Both are new concepts unlike my previous pieces and a pair of lacy earrings. My mind grows ideas much faster than I can produce them. I'm afraid I loose many of them in the process. I need to start sketching and I need more tools.

I know there will be a lot of traffic on the roads this weekend.
I want to take my son to some new place he has never seen before.
Niagara Falls is a doable driving distance for a 3 day weekend.
I may not be able to answer emails this weekend by the way.
This morning I am the only one in a happy good mood though. My son doesn't want to go ANYWHERE and my husband is hungry so they are both grouchy.
This too shall pass.

STARBUCKS DISAPPOINTMENT

I am very, very, very, very, can I say it one more time, very disappointed with Starbucks today.
No, they did not serve me bad coffee, worse.
I went to get my daily cup of my favorite addictive but delicious poison and I see a new product being promoted and proudly displayed at the counter.
A cup cozy.
The cozy is a handmade little cuff that came to fame on etsy.
A cute little outfit for your cup of coffee.
Created and made by an artist in a little home studio and today knocked off by a giant like Starbucks.
Shame on them.
Unless of course they struck a deal with the person that came up with this idea and compensated the artist, the Starbucks coffee left a bad taste in my mouth today.

ONE MAN'S TRASH...

Today is trash day in Western Springs.
I am not much of a trash lady, the people here however throw out some most interesting things.
I still resist my curiosity, but today was an exception.
I had to go back to Tony's school today because I forgot to place a folder with name labels he needed in his backpack.
This town is really small and to get to the school which is maybe 3 minutes away from the house I drive through the side street lined with trash.
...and as I go, I spot what looks like a stretched artist's canvas sitting on grass next to a cardboard box.
I think to myself "this cannot be an original left for a garbage truck at the side of the road, can it?"
I slow down to get a better look.
Yes, it is. It is indeed.
Would the garbage man save it from the crushing jaws of his truck?
It made me sad.
Someone's first attempt or maybe a child's creative urge left on canvas?
Abandoned at the curb waiting for execution.
I had to save it.
It is now hanging in my studio - an annonymous oversized flower.

I had the worst day ever. EVER!!! two days ago on Tuesday.
Black, black date in my life.
I had to take a sleeping pill in the middle of the day or die from a stroke.
Unfortunately after I woke up things didn't get much better.
Maybe one day I can talk about it, but not yet.
Perhaps it is better to just try to forget all about it.
I wish I could hit a delete button and make it all not happen.
Today on a happier note is a bit brighter.

WISCONSIN GATAWAY

What fun weekend this was.
We didn't go anywhere this summer. I've been itching for a little vacation all summer long, but for a million different reasons we ended up staying home.
This is why this last weekend was just great and all 3 of us really enjoyed spending some time away from home together.
First stop was Galena. We used to go there quite a lot and it was nice to re-visit.
Unfortunately the first stop was not what we expected. No stairs to climb the tower, oh well.

We packed a lot into the two days.
We walked up and down the downtown Galena. It took about an hour. Once we had enough of that we were on our way to my son's most favorite place in the Universe, namely: The House on the Rock Inn.

In the picture above you can see in the far distance on top of the cliff the funky structure. It is the actual House on the Rock, not the Inn.

The Inn has a crystal clear sparkling pool and a submarine kiddie pool.
There is no water park you can find, no matter how big and incredible, nothing is better than The House on the Rock. There is no convincing you can do.
My son will go and play at other places and then at the end of the day he'll say that The House on the Rock would have been better.
So you see, this was a mandatory stop on the way to Wisconsin Dells.

At The Dells we took a ride on The Ducks. If you're ever there you might want to do that. Probably not the kind of a ride you want to do over and over, but for the experience of it, one time is great.
A word of caution: when your guide asks you if you want to enter the water fast or slow, keep in mind that fast will get you completely soaked with at least a bucket full of water.

Walking The Dells commercial area will take about an hour and twenty minutes especially if you enter every gift shop looking for a cap bomb which by the way we did not find.
As you see by the afternoon we are all out of power. Even the powerade didn't help.

I have so many of these little aceo prints. I used to sell them on ebay, but of course I am no longer on ebay. They drove a LOT of traffic to my ebay store, unfortunately listing them takes a lot of time so I never got around to listing them on etsy. So many of you asked me in the past how to frame or display them. There are several way to do that of course.
These new sewn prints facilitate framing I hope.
They are also more substantial for gift giving than a miniature print just by itself.

I have a huge stash of gesso boards sitting in my studio for years. I guess it has been a long time since I painted with a brush. I have done pretty much nothing but palette knife paintings for the last 10 years and I feel all rusty when I pick up a brush as if I don't know what to do with it. It is kind of scary really. I wander if I forgot how to paint.
